Big Little Herbal Tips: New England aster

New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)

A perennial plant in the Asteraceae family, and one of the last to bloom in the late summer and early fall. Being the late bloomers that they are, Native Americans named her It-Brings-the-Fall.

They are sticky to the touch, containing a good amount of resin and the colors can vary from purple, violet, and lavender to all shades of pink.

They are soothing to the nervous system and beneficial for respiratory support, both things we can use through the fall and winter seasons.

The flowering tops can be tinctured, infused into honey or vinegar, made as tea or infusion and included in oxymel blends.

New England Aster Tincture

Fresh flowering New England Aster tops (stalk, leaf and flower)
100-proof vodka

🌟✨🌟

After harvesting or buying the fresh herb, tear or chop it up finely and place it in a clean glass jar to the top. Then pour 100-proof vodka over the plants.

Use a chopstick or small branch to push down the plants and poke holes throughout the plant material, to make sure the herbs are thoroughly saturated with the alcohol. Top up the jar with vodka several times over the next five minutes to make sure it is as full as possible, then screw the lid tightly closed.
