Big Little Herbal Tips: Goldenrod

Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)

The bright yellow spires of Goldenrod flowers hearkens the coming of fall.

These beautiful edible golden blossoms provide a lovely color for natural fabric dyeing.

There are more than 100 species of this perennial, daisy family herb. She grows all over the world and most species are probably medicinal in some way.

Goldenrod is a helpful tonic for the kidneys, bladder, prostate and urethra, is one my favorite allies for the musculoskeletal system and provides tremendous support for seasonal allergies.

The flowering tops can be tinctured, infused into honey, vinegar or oil, made as an infusion or tea and made into oxymels.

SOS (STRENGTHEN OUR SINUSES) ALLERGY RELIEF POWDER

1 part dried elderberries
1 part dried goldenrod leaves, stalks and flowers (any Solidago species)
1 part dried nettles leaves and stalks

Grind the herbs finely in a seed/coffee grinder that’s reserved for your herbs. Combine them in a jar for ease of use. Take from 1 teaspoon–1 tablespoon daily in hot or cold water, yogurt, or honey. Or sprinkle atop oatmeal, applesauce, or other food. Using local raw honey will add to its effectiveness. A second daily dose, or even a third, can be added if needed.

For a small animal such as a cat I suggest giving ?–¼ teaspoon daily. When I grind up the freshly dried herbs, I put them together into an 8- or 16-ounce glass jar for daily convenience. You could make this blend as an infusion, but it may work best as a powder because you’re consuming the whole plant.
