A Healing Story - Cold and Cough

A couple of friends of mine called me on a Saturday morning when they had bad colds that were getting worse. Her head felt heavy and was hurting badly. She was very congested, and concerned that it might turn into pneumonia, as had happened to her the year before. He was feeling weak and sick, and coughing a lot, which made his chest hurt. They'd been sick for a day or two at that point, and had been "trying everything" as people so often do. Does this sound familiar to you?

"Simplify," I suggested.

They already had echinacea tincture, so I came over that night and brought them elderberries and yarrow flowers. I knew they weren't up to doing much themselves, so I gave them the simplest instructions I could.

Simple Cold and Cough Recipe

1-2 teaspoons dried elderberries

1-2 teaspoons dried yarrow flowers

Pour 2 cups of boiled water over the combined herbs, and steep them on a very low flame for about 20 minutes.

Drink the tea warm-to-hot, with our without honey, at least 3 times daily.

For the first day or so, they were each to take 2-3 droppers of echinacea tincture every few hours in hot water or tea. After that, they could take it 3-4 times daily as they continued with their tea as needed. When I talked to them two nights later, they had both been resting (not something they do a lot of) and taking the herbs, and were amazed at how quickly they were feeling so much better!

We sometimes act as if we really aren't fond of ourselves at all. I don't think that's what we mean to do-but if we are honest, it sure looks that way a lot of the time! I call this dis-ease "SCDD" - Self-Care Deficit Disorder - and the cure is tending to yourself as you would tend to someone you truly love and care about. Let that person be YOU!

Everyone is different, with unique needs and their own variation on common needs, but self-care is a universal recommendation.

Be sure to check back to next week's blog as I will be teaching you how to make a single herb tincture with both fresh and dried herbs!
