The Art of Herbal Medicine Making

There is nothing as empowering as making your own medicines. Crafting your own herbal preparations will save you lots of money, and you will feel healthier and happier than ever before. The best way to learn is to do it. I teach this course in a variety of settings, including the upcoming course at the New York Open Center, starting Wednesday, March 29th at 8pm.

In this class we will work with fresh (and some dried) herbs, making several types of tinctures (with and without alcohol), liniments, oils, infusions, vinegars, syrups, salves, decoctions, poultices, compresses, fomentations, and more! I will share some of my favorite recipes and most effective remedies.

Every herbalist has her or his own favorite methods, just as every cook has her own style in the kitchen. No one's method is "wrong". I love to do things in a ways I find aesthetically pleasing or downright beautiful, and I'm open to learning new things and trying out new suggestions. When I discover a better way to do something, I adapt. I want to be as healthy as possible, so I always seek the best yet easiest ways to prepare and use my herbal medicines. I have other things I need, want, and like to do in my life, just as you do.

Here is a quick glimpse of steeping times to make infusions (medicinal strength teas) from some of my favorite herbs:

General Guidelines of Steeping Times:

Flowers - Steep 1-2 hours (though some can't steep this long, while others stand up to longer steeping)

Leaves & Stalks - Steep 8 hours

Roots & Barks: Steep up to at least 8 hours

  • Calendula blossoms: 30-60 minutes

  • Chamomile: 5 - 15 minutes

  • Evergreen Needles: 8-24 hours

  • Jasmine: 3 minutes

  • Lavender: 20 minutes

  • Rose: 75 minutes

  • Garden Sage: 1 hour

  • Yarrow Flowers: 1 hour (can be brewed longer)

  • Hawthorn berries: 8 - 12 hours

This is a tiny peek into all the wonderful information you will learn over the 6 week course. We will touch on many ways to create your own herbal medicine.
