Big Little Herbal Tips: Chaste tree berry

Big Little Herbal Tips: Chaste tree berry

Chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus)

Also called Chaste tree berry, chasteberry, vitex, and monk's pepper.

In the Lamiaceae or mint family, this beautiful flowering shrub is a well-known herb for supporting a woman’s cycles. It is native to the Mediterranean region and has over 2,000 years of recorded use!

Vitex berries help stabilize irregular periods and balance female hormone production in all stages of womanhood and transitions of life. Vitex berries are generally used in small amounts as tinctures or tea and have been used to ease flooding and hot flashes in menopause, to stimulate milk in nursing mothers, and are typically used over time, rather than for immediate results. Contemporary Swiss herbalist Rinna Nissim also uses the leaves for their anti-spasmodic properties.
