  Creating Peace in the Present

Peace, like love, is already present. Peace comes from acceptance of what is, of the natural cycles of life, death, and rebirth. Peace is natural to us. This does not mean that it is easy to live in peace.

Living peacefully challenges us to face what we fear without demonizing it. Living peacefully asks us to find and embrace those aspects of our own beings that we hate and/or fear, that we attempt to hide or to annihilate. The maze of fear of “the other” that is being drummed up with great fervor and fever can all too easily come to permeate our thoughts and feelings, and color all of our perceptions and experiences. Feeding this fear leads us further and further away from the present moment and away from the truth.

It is always that which is within us that we are relating to, no matter that it appears to be that which is outside of us. Ultimately, of course, there is no outside at all. Ask any physicist. There is truly no separation, only the appearance of separation. It is all, always, only us. What a beautiful word that is, US. What a difference two little periods can make. They turn US, which embraces all, into the U.S., which now embraces only that which serves a select few. It is time for US to get together and turn the U.S. back into US, one world that is united by care and concern for each other’s well being.

Our country, the U.S., has forgotten that it is supposed to stand for generosity, freedom, creativity, courage, integrity, and leadership. Therefore, it is up to US - we, the people, to take back our country and to restore our precious freedoms while we still can. We must trust the naturalness of peace and freedom, and take on the challenge of nurturing and nourishing peace within. Only with radical acceptance of self does peace reign within and without. When peace reigns within, it will reign without. For there is no difference, it is all one and the same. This is not instead of being active in politics, or instead of standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, but without this piece of the peace puzzle, the fighting will go on and on.

How do you cultivate peace within? By deciding to do so. By making a commitment to do so. It is remarkable and magical and stunning how the universe will step up to help you whenever you make a bona fide commitment. You may meditate, sing, write, go through analysis, plant a garden, volunteer to help someone, get politically active, or all of the above. The exact path doesn’t matter nearly as much as the sincerity of the commitment does. If you sincerely desire to love and accept yourself, and make that commitment again and again when challenges arise, you will begin to feel more at peace than ever before and you will then shine out peace wherever you go. This changes the world. As we are, so is our world.

So, let’s take back our power for peace, and bring it into the present. We are each needed to turn the tide of the world from fear and war to love and peace. We can have peace in the present, especially as we remember that it originates within each one of us.  The rewards are simple and yet profound. The opportunity to live peacefully with others is ultimately what most of us - we, the people, desire, and it is within our power to make it so.

Have courage, do the work, cultivate your vision, refuse to feed the warring energies within yourself. Feed peace within yourself and in your relations. Your present will become filled with peace, and it will spread to all the people of our beautiful Earth, Gaia, that is, it will spread beyond national borders and take firm, healthy root in US.
